Cynthia Valentine - 2009-09-16 20:12:19 - Engineering

a) The calorie, the Btu (British Thermal Unit), and the joule are units of energy; 1 calorie= 4.184 joules (exact), and 1 Btu = 252.0 calories. Convert 3.15 Btu to joules. ** For this Answer I got: 3.32 x 10^3 joules b) The measurement of sea septh was made in 1840 in the central South Atlantic , where a plummet was lowered 2425 fathoms. What is this depth in meters? Note that 1 fathom= 6ft, 1 ft= 12 in., and 1 in.= 2.54 x 10^ -2 m. (These relationships are exact). ***I couldn't find the answer because I did not know how to start off the problem. c) The estimated amount of recoverable oil from the field at Prudhoe bay in Alaska is 1.3 x 10^10 barrels. What is the amount of oil in cubix meters? One barrel = 42 gal (exact), 1 gal= 4 qt (exact), and 1 qt = 9.46 x 10^-4 m^3 . ***For this answer I got 2.05 x 10^9 m^3 -I would like to know if A and C are correct and how to go about finding the answer to B. Thanks

Best Answer:

A is fine. B) 2425 fathoms * 6 ft/fathom * 12 in/ft * 2.54x 10^-2 m/in = 4434.84 m C) is fine.
