I have ruined a few plastic things with finger nail polish remover..
I'd try it on an AOL disk to see what it does I think it will do it in ..
Call video store and ask them who can fix scratches on a CD..

I would not use fingernail polish.
The best resurfacer I have seen comes from a company called RTI (Research Technology International) http://www.rtico.com/
If you can find a place using one of their "disc check" machines and see if they will resurface it for you, that would be the best option.
There are some consumer resurfacers available but they are either ineffective or very time consuming.

I believe that you can buy a solution at just about any office supply store (i.e. Office Max, Staples, etc) that will remove of "fill in" minor scratches. I wouldn't recommend using finger nail polish remover. they also make hardware that removes scratches also for a small price!

There are some spinning CD cleaners that have worked for me. The SkipDr works well. They basically put more scratches in the CD, but going from the inside out, not in the direction of rotation. I have also used toothpaste and a rag and cleaned from the inside out.
There is no guarantee though. Some people have claimed it has made it worse, so experiment on a CD you don't care much about.

My kids told me about using creamy peanut butter and a coffee filter on CDs to take out the scratches. I didn't think it would work, but it does! I guess between the two, theres just enough abrasion to polish and not scratch. They had CD polishers on the market. But try the PB first, you'll be surprised!

Option 3: Use a Home Remedy
Often used when all you will be out is a few bucks if it does not work. Methods usually work temporarily but can make discs worse. Copy disk to drive and make a new disc ASAP.
Typical remedies: brass polish "Brasso" , Toothpaste, Car Wax, RAVE Hair Spray
"Brasso" works very well. To use this product on a disc, (or toothpaste), apply with a clean cloth (like an old tee shirt), rubbing from the hole outward toward the rim...NOT IN A CIRCULAR MOTION. Once you've rubbed in the Brasso all the way onto the disc, take another portion of the clean cloth and rubbing in the same manner, polish the disc so it's shiny again. Now try the disc.
I used toothpaste technique followed by spray furniture wax.

Best thing I've ever used is a thing called semi-chrome.
Used to polish mag wheels, but the polish is super fine so it will remove surface scratches with no problem.
Get yourself some cotton balls dab a little semi-chrome on the CD and then making clock wise circular motions rub the entire CD wait about 5 min and then wipe clean with rubbing alcohol, remove film with a dry cotton ball and it should be ready to play.
Semi-chrome is a German product maybe a bit difficult to locate but I know for sure Napa auto parts carries it. It comes in a small tooth paste like tube.
