What's the difference between all-purpose flour and self-rising flour?

GreenGrasshopper - 2006-05-28 09:25:14 - Cooking Recipes

I have a cobbler recipe that calls for self-rising but I only have AP flour right now. Can I add something to the AP to make it work? My recipe calls for 1 cup of self-rising flour.

Best Answer:

All-Purpose All-purpose flour is a multipurpose flour made from hard and soft wheat. It can be used for all baking purposes. It is available bleached and unbleached. Self-rising Self-rising flour is an all-purpose flour into which baking powder (a leavening agent) and salt have been added. When used in a recipe in place of all-purpose flour, the baking powder and salt are omitted from the other ingredients. YOU CAN ADD THE BAKING POWDER BUT EASY ON THE SALT FOR YOUR COBBLER Peggy's Quick Cobbler * 1 stick butter, 1/4 cup * 1 cup flour * 1 cup milk * 1 cup sugar * 2 tsp baking powder * 4 to 5 cups fruit * 1 cup sugar Preheat oven to 350°. Melt the butter in 9x13 pan. Mix together the flour, milk, sugar, and baking powder; pour over melted butter Put fruit (your choice), approx 4-5 cups over mixture Sprinkle 1 cup sugar over top Bake in 350° oven until golden brown (usually 30-35 minutes depending on oven temp.) Yep, self rising flour has baking powder in it, you could add 1 tsp of baking powder to your 1 cup of flour.

Ermm.... All purpose flour is simple, common flour. But self raising flour has a bit of baking powder in it!! I too was once confused about it but I brought thios cookie book where I was told about it. To make self rasing flour, add 1 tsp of baking powder in 1 cup of all purpose flour. I got this from the cookie book too!! ENJOY!!!
